Sorry Twitter and Google+, but Facebook is in this social game to stay. Facebook has recently announced that it is going to acquire at least seven more companies this year. You may be asking “what more does Facebook need?” Well, the number one social networking site is looking toward the future and focusing on thedesign of their webpage, keeping service reliable, and advancing mobile services to beat out Google and Twitter – according to Bloomberg News.
The forward thinking organization knows that people have a need for a pleasant aesthetic setting. Their logical thinking is that if people enjoy the look and feel of the site, they will stay on it longer. Facebook has been expanding generating an estimated 2 billion dollars in revenue. Facebook has tough competition with the most dynamic search engine in the world Google which in June released Google + which is supposed to be the new and improved social networking site. Due to this competition, Facebook has to adapt and widen to stay in this social media game.
Honestly, what does this recent announcement mean to the future of social media and networking in general? Is Facebook going to be a social media conglomerate? It seems as though monopolies are still prevalent in society today even thoughmost assume monopoly is only a mere board game. Facebook’s recent announcement of their 2011 acquisitions demonstrates a culture of ruling capitalistic titans. These acquisitions only prove that corporations rule our country and that the free market ideas are being ruled by a sense of social Darwinism that is prevalent in our oil companies and media conglomerates. Are the days of mom and pop companies long gone?
