When it comes to the blogging world, Tumblr may be the easiest and most engaging platform out there. It’s a place where most go to view pictures, but usually end up sucked in by random quotes, links, audio, and video. It’s a major platform for artists, especially talented photographers, videographers, or the more musically inclined. Basically it’s a simple to use- awesomely creative outlet- for those of us who have too much bouncing around in our heads for Twitter or Facebook.
So why does Tumblr’s Facebook page fall on the lame side? Who really knows…. but this is what we think could help it go from dreary to creatively social.
1. Uncool Exclusitivity: Let’s face it, unless you’re a super hipster/indie/swanky/artist, a big question mark likely appears over your head upon hearing the word Tumblr. Exclusivity in the social media world doesn’t really float anymore, and it’s time to embrace the beauty of a Facebook page.
RTMG Suggestion: Rule one is to always have a landing page. A page that sums up the pure “greatness” of Tumblr and encourages visitors to promptly like the page is recommended. Currently, there is nothing exciting or creative about their Facebook presence. Fail.
2. Feature Fans: Tumblr is full of artists with backgrounds in various types of media, as well as a wide variety of interests. Everything from tattoos, oil paintings, vintage photography, and even fashion has a home on this website; why not proudly display this diverse community.
RTMG Suggestion: One landing page could feature a “Tumblr of the Week” or “Post of the Week”. Make the users feel involved, encourage greater conversation on the website and Facebook. Have Fans share on Facebook their favorite post from the week and you’ll be able to gauge from the “likes” and comments what/who is “Tumblr of the Week”.
3. Contest: Tap into the incredibly talented users already involved on your platform. Give them recognition – something to fight for! Okay sorry to get all Joan of Arc over here, but create that buzz that is so desperately necessary these days.
RTMG Suggestion: This profile picture makes me want to throw soap in my eyes. It’s boring and drab. Yawn…. Am I looking at a paper distribution company? Oh no, that’s just the way a creative blog site is choosing to represent themselves. Create a contest for fans and Tumblr users to submit new suggestions for a profile picture and feature it for a month. Look at is as a magazine issue, and each month gets a fresh look.
