Thursday Three -The Onion: Social Media Improvement

The Onion is a world-renowned news company, giving the most up to date and reliable news available. All right, maybe not, but if you haven’t heard of them then you are seriously missing out. If you have ever watched CNN, your local news, or even ESPN and thought to yourself, “this is all really boring and everyone must have an IQ of 100”, then The Onion may be exactly what you are interested in. Here, a satirical twist is given to current news stories, global events, and even ridiculous entertainment. With a great message already in place, this is how we think they can improve their business via social platforms.

1. Landing page: Currently when visitors land on their Facebook they are shown a visually boring information page. Let’s face it; the graphics on national news stations are anything but boring. Most days I completely zone out when ESPN is on, I have no idea what I was just told, but I do know that there were some intricate graphics.
RMTG Suggestion: Their landing page needs to resemble what is seen on typical news casting shows. Over the top graphics bordering their most recent news stories (preferably videos). This will give the page a coherent look as well as an incentive for Facebook users to “Like” and return to their page.

2. Online Store: They have the bare bones set up on their Facebook page, however nothing that is appealing. Yes I would love to own a witty Onion mug, no their Facebook tab does not make me want to buy any paraphernalia. This is the perfect opportunity to showcase their unique and conversation starting pieces. Everything from T-shirts and their hilarious books could be sold under one Facebook Tab. All it takes is a little work and a visual of all their products.

3. Additional: They have done a great job making their presence known on Twitter and YouTube along with Smartphone Apps. Now what they need is a Facebook/ Twitter Promotion. Something that will feature the millions of followers tapped into this great company. Possibly a fan of the week or a Giveaway Prize to see a SportsDome taping. Anything that will make their trusty fans feel valued and engaged.
