Facebook has not only managed to change communicating on a daily basis but now they’ve tackled events as well. Whether planning on attending an annual festival, checking in on the happenings of award shows, or throwing a birthday party for your best friend, Facebook may be one of the most useful tools to utilize.
This past weekend, the famously brain damaging event known as Gasparilla, hit the west coast of Florida. The Tampa parade commemorates pirates and silly drunk people, for what reason – no one is entirely sure, but it still manages to bring people from all walks of life to Bayshore. Like most things today, Gasparilla decided to go social – utilizing everything from an Official Page, Event, Check-in, and a Twitter hashtag.
In the past many would plan on attending events and haphazardly meeting up with friends or would walk nervously in to a party wondering whom they may see. Now some of the mystery is gone. Virtual RSVP lists are made, friends are checking in to the destination, and conversation is being held on the Page and Twitter reel.
Why do people go to events?
Everyone’s answer is generally the same, to socialize, to network, to meet new friends and enjoy time with old friends. Social media and events are a perfect fit. Now you can easily run into someone, create realistic expectations, even assess the aftermath or create new bonds.
Interact from your couch
Now you can take part in the event even if it’s just on your Television screen. This awards season the SAG Awards made Twitter an integral part of their show, posting Twitter updates containing “#SAGAwards” before commercial breaks and encouraging others to join in the conversation. Everyone from nominees to viewers at home had the chance to comment on the event’s happenings. The cast of Modern Family and Glee were particularly fun to follow with theirpicture uploads and funny comments, even congratulatory tweets.
