Sponsored Stories to Debut in News Feed in 2012

Beginning in January, the time will come for Facebook’s “Sponsored Stories” ads to appear in the main news feed. In the past, ads have been limited to a designated, but in the fall, Facebook began moving sponsored stories through the ticker. So what does this mean for you? Well, this will be especially nice for those of us who sometimes have trouble deciphering between promotions and activities generated by friends! For all of you ice cream lovers, Ben and Jerry’s is the first brand to sign up to run sponsored stories in people’s news feed.

Facebook introducing sponsored stories in the main news feed will be the first time they have incorporated advertisements in this space since 2007—this was Beacon, which backfired for privacy reasons. Sponsored stories in the main news feed are projected to receive a strong click through rate, meaning that viewers are expected to be more receptive to the content. The click through rate for the sponsored stories already have a 46% increase over other forms of Facebook advertisement—that’s pretty substantial! This suggests that these sponsored stories are the most cost effective form of advertisement currently on Facebook. Currently, there are seven different variations of sponsored stories; the most popular are those that refrain “likes”.

How do you think sponsored stories will do in the main news feed on Facebook?
