Tuesday Tips and Tricks: Become a Mommy Maven

Think back to weekday afternoons. If you were a tot running around at two in the afternoon trying to get your mom’s attention it was generally All My Children that won. If you were a mom folding laundry and the VHS tape holding your precious Soap Opera turned out defective, watch out anyone who stepped in your path. I can still remember my mom setting the VHS timer and having a meltdown if it failed to record the happenings of Susan Lucci.

Soap Operas ruled the afternoons of stay at home moms and housewives. But have you noticed the recent change? ABC recently cancelled two, All My Children and One Life to Live, which up until now had been daytime hotspots since the late 1960’s. Major changes have hit the networks, and are definitely a telltale sign of the shift occurring in households across America.

So what exactly are moms doing now? They are blogging, searching for the best Internet deals, crafting, creating Etsy accounts, they are eBay bidding, and delving into the various social tools available 24/7. Here are our Tips and Tricks to becoming a stellar Mommy Maven.

Create a business

Gone are the days of sitting behind a desk in a cubicle with your kids pictures push pinned to the walls. All it takes is a little imagination and the proper social tools to kick start your business from the comfort of your Pottery Barn couch. While the kids are watching Lion King for the 100th time, you can now bake, craft, create just about anything and make it a successful venture. Between sites such as Etsy, Facebook and eBay, it is easy to reach your desired audience and join a community.

Food blogs

Those who have an insane passion for baking, cooking, and concocting in the kitchen now have a place to share what they are creating. Food blogs have become a hot spot for moms looking to try something new, or even run a bakery from home. Connect with a local coffee shop; watch your passion become your profession.

Mommy blogs

While the kids are napping moms are blogging. Take Zoe Schaeffer for example. She started a successful mommy blog Macaroon Original and has now been mentioned in Gap Mag. She has a fun loving spirit that shows in her posts on everything from the cupcakes used at her kid’s birthday or the light fixture she just fell in love with that day. Don’t forget about Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP– the famous mommy blogger.

Shop Smart

Discounts have never been easier to find. Between Facebook and Twitter feeds constantly updating fans and followers on the latest deals, they are nearly impossible to miss. Then of course there are the various coupon sites. All it takes is searching Google, reading a newsfeed, or searching twitter to shop without the stress.

Educate

It’s easy to stay up to date on the latest news, discoveries, and information with everything available on your 4 x 3 phone. Create a twitter account and follow reputable news sources such as @NYTimes, your local news station, and @WholeFoods. Then while waiting in line to pick up your kids from school, sitting at the doctor’s office, or wandering the grocery store, all the news you need is in your hand.

There you have it. Those are our tips that will be sure to make you a successful socialite mommy. It’s time to start realizing the characters on General Hospital aren’t real and are only taking away precious family and creation time.
